This chapter examined Stalin’s “revolution from above” of industrialization through the Five-Year Plan and his program of collectivization which took place from 1928 to 1933. James highlights the levels of state repression involved in these processes, which made them very different from what was originally envisaged by the Left Opposition, and also the famines and revolts that took place in the countryside amid the brutal “liquidation of the kulak.”
