Introduction to the Cuban Edition of The Black Jacobins
-
Published:January 2017
This chapter is the first English translation of John H. Bracey’s introduction to the Cuban edition of The Black Jacobins (2010). In it, the author discusses the specific circumstances of the appearance of a Cuban edition of The Black Jacobins. He outlines the global significance of the Haitian Revolution, and suggests that to comprehend the reality of Haiti today we need some understanding of these historical events. James’s Black Jacobins is presented as an indispensable starting point in such analyses. Bracey reflects on lengthy discussions with James during the latter’s stay in the United States during the late 1960s and early 1970s. The Black Jacobins is presented as a text key to understanding the reality of the continuing strength of white supremacist ideologies and practices, as well as to challenging the complex legacies or slavery and colonialism.
