In this section, Matthew Quest explores a tension in James’s historical philosophy. James has often been understood as seeking to capture the changing forms of thought and action, spontaneity and organization, in the Haitian revolutionary movement. But was black autonomy secured by the nation-state or the self-emancipation of the slaves themselves?
