In the third chapter of the section, leading scholar of the Haitian Revolution Carolyn E. Fick recalls working as a student with James while researching her own ground-breaking volume of Haitian revolutionary history. She describes the intellectual and political impact of the meeting with James on her life and work. Fick outlines the emergence – under the influence of James and George Rudé – of the project that culminated in the publication of The Making of Haiti, her study of the Saint-Domingue, or Haitian Revolution “from below.” The chapter illustrates how James’s influence provided the perspectives and concrete guidelines required for the study of the popular movements and mentality of the enslaved masses that Fick was to undertake.
