The introduction situates the book within the field of performance studies, describing how performative histories have a unique ability to alter how we make history and conjure memory. It theorizes key concepts such as the archive, race in a South African context, the body, and gesture. By superimposing disparate aporias in the historical record, it allows for will to emerge through critical acts of imagination that are placed in conversation with traditional historical evidentiary processes.
