The Disjunctive Kernel of Japanese Media Theory
-
Published:February 2017
The afterword considers and furthers the parameters of the volume by rethinking its organization, and presenting an alternative path through the essays collected in the volume. Beginning with the significant tension between the intra- and transcultural underlying the volume’s stress on media theory in Japan, the afterword rearranges the contributions into three “modes”: Remediating the West, Mediatizing Japan, and Inter-izing (Beyond) Japan. This draws out possibilities of speaking to specificity of media and media theorization while taking the movement across contexts into account. This negotiation, distilled from a rereading of this volume’s contributions, locates ways to consider the concrete manifestations of the “continuum of life in the age of global media.”
