Drawing on the examples of quantum physics (Heisenberg’s uncertainty principle) and on Adrie Kusserow’s use of poetry to explore the liminal spaces of refugee lives, this interlude considers uncertainty as a constitutive and inescapable part of the practice of ethnography and as a potential source of new insights and connections. As such, it urges ethnographers to accept and respond with generosity and openness to the uncertainty that inevitably attends their research and writing.
