I Love My Selfie
Ilan Stavans is Lewis-Sebring Professor in Latin American and Latino Culture at Amherst College. A Guggenheim Fellow, he is the author, editor, and translator of numerous books, including Reclaiming Travel, also published by Duke University Press.
Adál Maldonado is a visual, performance, installation, and video artist; playwright; cofounder of the first all-artist political party in Puerto Rico; the recipient of a Pollock-Krassner Fellowship; and the author of several books, including Out of Focus Nuyoricans.
The seventh chapter looks at Adál as a Nuyorican artist interested in science fiction. It comments on his attraction to the genre of the fotonovela. Stavans visits Adál in San Juan, Puerto Rico, where they discuss Spanglish not only as a language but also as a cultural approach to life. The chapter then returns to Adál’s work by looking at his series of auto-portraits called Go Fuck Your Selfie.
