The fourth chapter follows the career of Adál Maldonado, aka Adál, the Puerto Rican performance artist known for his auto-representations. It details how Ilan Stavans and Adál met and the influences that figures like artists Andy Warhol and Robert Mapplethorpe have had on the photographer’s work. It also explores the self-portraits of Mexican painter Frida Kahlo and the famous National Geographic portrait Afghan Girl. It concludes with an invitation by Adál to Stavans to visit him in his studio in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
