This essay argues against the tendency of advocates for sex and justice to divide their movements up into separate, tightly enclosed, and isolated silos. It endorses instead what Vatican officials call a “gender agenda.” The Vatican sees a tight connection between and among all the components it incorporates under the “gender agenda,” such as the dismantling of sex roles, the acceptance of homosexuality, and access to the new reproductive technologies, condoms, other contraceptives, and abortion. Unfortunately, the feminist and sexual rights advocates on the other side of the “gender agenda” from the Vatican rarely make common cause or even seem to see the connections between the issues to which they are committed. Not only should advocates for sex and justice be much more attentive to what opponents such as those in the Vatican are saying about them; they should move closer to actually becoming their worst nightmare.
