The introduction details the purposes and goals of the book, that is, to further the project of recovering and mapping Kanaka intellectual history from the plethora of sources left by our recent ancestors, written in the Hawaiian language. It gives the rationale for the selection of the two lesser known writers that the book focuses on, and the common themes found in their works: the dedication to perpetuate the language and the indigenous knowledge carried by it; the foresight to preserve that knowledge from the past for future generations (moʻokūʻauhau consciousness); aloha ʻāina, the close relationship among the people, the land, and deities, and the political acts that stem from those; and the commitment to teaching the language, history, culture, and law from Kanaka epistemologies to the youth of their day and to us.
