Although Wright visited Indonesia as a freelance journalist covering the Bandung Conference, his own activities and experiences in Indonesia were also extensively reported in sections of the Indonesian press. From criticism of Wright’s substandard hotel accommodation on his arrival in Jakarta to reports of lectures he gave to Indonesian audiences after his conference attendance, the Indonesian press reports constitute a previously untapped record of Wright’s Indonesian travels. Among the excitement and activity generated by the conference, both among Indonesia’s political elite and the crowds who lined the streets of Bandung while the conference was under way, Wright emerges as a significant focus of attention. This is particularly the case in relation to the coverage of Wright’s activities in Indonesia Raya, whose editor, Mochtar Lubis, met Wright on his arrival in Indonesia and was his entry point into literary circles in Jakarta.
