Published shortly before Wright’s arrival in Indonesia, Vuyk’s review of Partisan Review’s short story collection indicates the positive view of transnational literary exchanges held by Wright’s Indonesian interlocutors. The review discusses the role of the “little magazine” in furthering exchange between writers from different national literary traditions and in making known developments in world literature, a characteristic of the burgeoning number of Indonesian “little magazines” at this time. The review also endorses the decision by the editors of Partisan Review not to allow art to be used as a tool of political propaganda, despite their own radical politics. This was a topical issue in the Indonesian literary environment Wright was shortly to encounter.
