This chapter examines Llamojha’s emergence as an activist, exploring why he dedicated his life to a struggle for social justice and showing how his dreams and ambitions transgressed the boundaries of the expected life course of an indigenous peasant. The chapter explains how he learned to read, despite the absence of schools in his community, and how literacy became his most important political tool. The chapter describes the abusive practices of local hacendados, or landlords, including the illegal seizures of community livestock and land theft. This chapter reveals the terrible suffering of indigenous peasants on haciendas, the difficulties Andean campesinos faced in trying to get education, and the major power disparities between Peru’s Andean regions and the capital city of Lima. Llamojha’s stories also introduce one of Peru’s most important political parties: the American Popular Revolutionary Alliance (APRA).
