The Introduction begins with a critique of long-standing stereotypes about Mexican working-class men, especially their alleged machismo. It provides background on Mexico City in the late 19th and early 20th centuries (including demographic changes in the workforce) and the satiric penny press for workers. It situates this study within the academic literature on the working-class politics and culture of the period and supplies a theoretical framework for understanding penny press efforts to redeem working-class masculinity and the implications of those efforts for working-class men. The Introduction ends with an analysis of the virtues and limitations of the penny press as an historical source.
