The editors’ introduction establishes the context within which these lectures on Cultural Studies by Stuart Hall were given in the summer of 1983 at the University of Illinois as part of a teaching institute linked with a conference, “Marxism and the Interpretation of Culture: Limits, Frontiers, Boundaries.” As a theoretical history of Cultural Studies situated at a particular moment in time, the introduction describes and explains the choices the editors have made in order to maintain as much as possible the voice and rhythms of Stuart Hall’s oral delivery.
