This chapter describes Bruno’s attempt to escape the Vila de Dois Rios prison on the island of Ilha Grande. It describes conditions in the prison in the months prior to it being shut down in 1994. The chapter also discusses the conditions that led to the construction of new, maximum-security prisons on the mainland.
