This chapter relates Bruno’s initial experiences of being in a navy jail, from where he is transferred to two different civilian prisons. Through his narrative, Bruno describes in detail the horrific prison conditions, the brutality of the prison guards, and the ways in which prison-based gangs, in this case the Comando Vermelho, respond to the situation. The chapter also discusses the nature of the Brazilian prison system in general, and the recent increase in the size of the prisoner population due to the country’s “war on drugs.”
