In this chapter, Rachel recalls her mother’s death—how initially it was almost a relief, because Rosemarie was finally no longer in pain, but how that feeling quickly turned to grief. Rachel describes how she, her father, and her mother stayed in vigil together as death approached and how, even after Rosemarie died, she was able somehow to comfort her daughter and help her get through the devastation.
