The Industry of Fake Experience
-
Published:March 2015
Fake experience is a constant in contemporary culture. We strive for authenticity. But authentic is easy to hide, easy to replicate. Tourist travel is full of fake experience and false emotions. People want to experience extreme yet controlled sensations—and companies and governments are ready to satisfy that hunger. This chapter analyzes why and how fake realities, from Disneyland to an artificial terrorist training camp, have become tourist destinations. It ponders how colonialism and the travel industry organize our view of the world and of what is exciting.
