This entry gives a short account of hearing, with special attention given to terms with which it is often contrasted, like seeing, listening, and Deafness. After reviewing the word’s recent linguistic career, the chapter offers a capsule history of the disciplines that have attempted to construct a hearing subject—most notably psychoacoustics and communication engineering—and argues for a more radical notion of difference as the basis for advancing the scholarship on hearing.
