A report on the poetry of Aqeel Shatir, a Muslim poet in Gujarat, where in 2002 more than a thousand Muslims were killed by Hindu mobs. Shatir writes in Urdu, a language predominantly used by Muslims in India. A few years ago, Shatir was in the news when a critic introducing his book remarked on how the Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi, elected the prime minister of India in May 2014, had killed not only Muslims but also Urdu.
