Epilogue: When Blackness Enters the Frame
-
Published:September 2015
Two videos shared on YouTube are discussed in the epilogue as a way to bring together the book’s key concerns around the question of what happens when blackness enters the frame. One video shows what happens when two people—one black and one white—test out a webcam’s automated facial tracking function, and the other is a tutorial on how to apply makeup in order to avoid cameras equipped with facial recognition technology. Both videos reveal the possibilities when standard algorithms in computer vision technology render blackness unseen.
