Introduction: Embedded Infrastructures
-
Published:September 2015
The introduction sets up the puzzle animating the book: With no shortage of financial or material resources, how might Mumbai’s fitful taps be made sense of? The introduction critically engages theoretical debates among urban geographers, political economists, and culturalist critics about the origins and implications of contemporary patterns of urban infrastructural connectivity and disconnection. In Mumbai a broad political coalition of actors, united by the imperative to transform Mumbai into a world-class city, joined hands to put market logic to work in pursuit of Mumbai’s makeover. Mumbai’s market-driven, rapidly changing built space has been unbundled from the planning trajectories and regulations governing the city’s land-bound water infrastructures. The book’s infrastructural approach is examined, explaining the analytical leverage that an ethnographically grounded perspective provides.
