Starting with a consideration of what a story is, and the inadequacy of a coherent narrative about necessarily chaotic lives, the introduction examines the changing history of African Americans mourning the murder and subsequently celebrating the life of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. In both cases the issue is the changing ways that the violence of the dominant society was partially hidden within the larger social contexts of these commemorative events.
