This chapter explores the love relationship of two people, Linda Patrik and David Kaczynski, who met at age eleven and formed a lifetime friendship culminating in marriage at age forty, only to find their newfound happiness derailed by Linda’s suspicion that David’s brother, Theodore, was the long-sought serial killer known as the Unabomber. The second half of the chapter describes how, after reading the Unabomber’s manifesto in the Washington Post, the couple faced an intense ethical dilemma that pitted family loyalty against a moral imperative to stop the Unabomber’s violence. The chapter goes on to describe a process of shared ethical decision making whereby the couple sought to prevent further violence while minimizing harm to David’s brother and mother.
