Gendun Chopel: Tibet's First Modern Artist is based on the proceedings and exhibition of the 2003 Gendun Chopel Centennial Conference held at Trace Foundation's Latse Library in New York City. The catalog, published ten years after the conference, features paintings, drawings, and sketches of Gendun Chopel (1903–1951) that were exhibited at the commemorative event. This exhibition of his works on paper was the first time his art was exhibited in the U.S. Whereas the exhibition featured twenty-seven of Chopel's images, this catalog includes a total of fifty-nine, an unprecedented collection of his works on paper. With clear reproductions of all objects, the volume proves to be an essential and rare compendium.
