The Norman Foerster Prize for the best essay published in American Literature in 2023 was awarded to Michele Elam for her essay “Poetry Will Not Optimize; or, What Is Literature to AI?” (95:2, June 2023). Honorable mentions were awarded to N. Katherine Hayles for her essay “Subversion of the Human Aura: A Crisis in Representation” (95:2, June 2023) and Ethan A. Plaue for his essay “The Parasitical Trick: Mediating Dispossession in Early America” (95:1, March 2023). Members of the judging committee were Monique Allewaert (chair), University of Wisconsin-Madison; Stephanie Li, Duke University; and David Anthony, Southern Illinois University.
