The Norman Foerster Prize for the best essay published in American Literature in 2019 was awarded to Gregory Laski for his essay “Reconstructing Revenge: Race and Justice after the Civil War” (91:4, December 2019). Honorable mentions were awarded to Julius B. Fleming Jr. for “Transforming Geographies of Black Time: How the Free Southern Theater Used the Plantation for Civil Rights Activism” (91:3, September 2019) and Sara Marcus for “‘Time Enough, but None to Spare’: The Indispensable Temporalities of Charles Chesnutt’s The Marrow of Tradition” (91:1, March 2019). Members of the judging committee were Ann Keniston (chair), University of Nevada, Reno; Emily Lordi, Vanderbilt University; and Cynthia Wu, Indiana University.
