The annual Norman Foerster Prize for the best essay published in American Literature in 2017 was awarded to John Levi Barnard for his essay “The Cod and the Whale: Melville in the Time of Extinction” (89:4, December 2017). An honorable mention was awarded to Andrew Donnelly for his essay “The Talking Book in the Secondary Classroom: Reading as a Promise of Freedom in the Era of Neoliberal Education Reform” (89.2, June 2017). Members of the judging committee were Stephanie Foote (chair), West Virginia University; Rachel Adams, Columbia University; and Marianne Noble, American University.
